Comparing Generator Quotes
When comparing generator pricing and contractor quotes, be sure you are comparing apples to apples. Here are some points to consider…
Are you getting a stable cement (not composite that comes with the Generac Generator) base or simply gravel or existing ground for a base? A stable and solid base will prevent future shifting of your generator and provide a level surface for your generator to ensure proper operation. Professional Quote: Is the quote handwritten or typed? Is the quote detailed with specific terms, conditions, cancellation policy? Are there details about what the contractor is providing and what you, the consumer, will be responsible for? Do you have an installation time frame in writing? What are the terms and conditions of the installation time frame and are these in writing? Do you really know what you are getting for the bottom line cost the contractor is quoting you?
- Does your quote include the following details spelled out?
- Did you receive photos or a diagram of your proposed project? Do you clearly understand where your Generac Generator and automatic transfer switch will be placed? Is there clear definition of any changes that will be your responsibility (shrubs removed, area cleared, etc.)?
- Are your receiving printed panels ledgers for select circuit systems that clearly defined exactly what circuits will be transferred during a power outage? (this may not apply to systems that transfer the entire home, office or business)
- Does the contract/quote include and show that the contractor is acquiring the proper permitting?(Note; only a handful of jurisdictions/counties require the homeowner to acquire the permit. Traditionally the contractor is the one who is required to acquire the permit, as they are the responsible, licensed contractor performing the work and ultimately responsible for their work.)
- Start-up or factory warranty break-in? Is this included in your contract/quote in writing or is the installer simply turning the key and starting the Generator to prove it will run and activate the warranty? Does the company have factory certified and trained manufacturer’s technicians that perform the start-up? A start-up / factory break-in will include; a factory trained/certified technician who will verify the installation, start-up the unit, activate the warranty, provide certain adjustments where necessary, discuss weekly testing, set and record your weekly test time. This technician will load the generator through stages to ensure proper operation at various levels of load and will make permanent record of these readings. Once this load check is performed, a change of the factory oil & filter will be performed to ensure you are ready for the next outage. The technician will perform a thorough walk through of the operation of the generator, answer any questions and give indicators for a customer to monitor on a regular basis to ensure the unit is operational and ready for the next outage.
- Does the contractor provide service, warranty repairs, extended warranty or NEW Mobile Link Monitoring Equipment and Service? Are these spelled out and offered up front?
- Is this contractor a certified dealer of the product or who has a certified dealer who handles his start-up certifications and break-ins? Are these services or information detailed in the contract/quote?
- Does this contractor have 24/7/365 emergency service?
